[1] (3rd group); the back of the photograph is inscribed in ink: "The best likeness[?] of Livingstone I have yet seen, Robert Moffat", with photographer's stamp: T. & R. Annan, Glasgow

SCNHRB c.1 matches variant no. 2 in the chart on p. 14 of Frank R. Bradlow's article, "The variants of the 1857 edition of Livingstone's Missionary travels and researches in South Africa" (in Livingstone, 1873-1973, ed. B.W. Lloyd, p. 6-19), with the unrevised text on p. 8, the tinted lithographs signed by T. Picken and Day & Son (frontis., plate opposite p. 66, and plate opposite p. 225), and a presentation inscription dated "29.10.1857", however, the SCNHRB copy also includes the index which is lacking in variant no. 2's description

Bound in at the end of v.2 is a 27 p. pamphlet of the "Farewell Livingstone Festival". Laid-in (now removed) is an ink ms. letter from John Murray IV, dated 22 April 1893, identifying Robert Cooke as the nephew of John Murray II and the business partner and cousin of John Murray III.
